Celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day, and National Poetry Month in the JKC!

Design a "Save the Earth" poster-grades 6-12-posters will be accepted until April
30, and will be displayed in the library. Two will be chosen to be displayed on the Buchanan District Library's website.

Plant a flower, write a poem, make a litter bug, or a wind dragon! All in April in the JKC!

Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle, by Major Brian Dennis, Kirby Larson and Mary Nethery

When the story begins, Nubs is just a nameless dog-of-war living in Iraq. No human, no name, no belly rubs and no love. This is when Major Brian Dennis befriends a stray dog and names him Nubs, because his ears had been cut off to signify that he was an Iraqi dog-of-war. Later Major Dennis has to leave the fort where Nubs lives. When Major Dennis comes back to the fort, Nubs greets him with a giant gash in his side! The team medic cleans Nubs and Major Dennis nurses Nubs back to health. Keeping Nub was a very touchy situation because soldiers are forbidden by Army rules to keep pets. Each time Major Dennis’ team left the fort Nubs chased after the caravan but he could not keep up and was always left behind. One time when Major Dennis left, Nubs chased the caravan and as usual he fell behind. Only this time, instead of returning to the outpost, he continued on. He crossed 70 miles of hostile desert to get to Major Dennis! Nubs found him at a fort on the Jordanian Border. There the soldiers made him a dog house and gave him a blanket and a collar. Best of all he got belly rubs everyday. Now, two soldiers from outside the team reported Nubs. The team was given just four days to get rid of Nubs. Major Dennis and his team collected money and enlisted the help of family and friends to send Nubs to Los Angeles. Nubs waited there for Major Dennis to return home. Now Nubs has a name, a human, belly rubs, a home and most importantly, love.

I think that my favorite part is the love and how Nubs touched so many lives. This really proves the old saying, “dogs are man’s best friend.” All you do is give them your heart and they give you theirs. Simple as that! They will always believe the best in you. Nubs believed that Major Dennis would find a way to keep him safe, just like Penny, my dog knows I will take care of her.

March is Pet Month in the cafe. We Need Your Help! The JKC teens are trying to make a difference for abandoned pets. We will be making homemade dog treats, and collecting old blankets, bed spreads, and towels to help the Berrien County Animal Shelter care for their pets. We are also asking patrons for donations of cat and dog food for the shelter.

Guys Lock-in-A Noisy Affair!

The guys' only lock-in held at the Buchanan District Library on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. was a great time! 17 guys attended, and they had a blast.

The Wii was available, and Link's Crossbow Training was the big game of the night. The guys had fun testing out the new skeeball game, and playing Fact or Crap. Tag was also a hit. They even held an impromptu hotdog eating contest!

It was crazy, it was noisy, and it was all at the Buchanan District Library!

Girls Lock-in Well Attended!

The girls' only lock-in at the Buchanan District Library, held on Saturday, November 14, 2009, from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. was a big success! 21 girls attended, along with Emma the dog, and Templeton the rat!

The Wii was available and the place was rocking with Guitar Hero. The girls worked on Teen Artist Trading cards to be traded with another library, and were playing hide-and-seek by the end of the night.

The guys' only lock-in will be on Saturday, November 21. Make sure to be here for the fun, Guys!

A signed permission slip is required to attend the lock-ins and MUST BE turned in by Friday, November 13 at 6:00 p.m. for girls, and Friday, November 20 at 6:00 p.m. for guys. Permission slips will be at the front desk. Space is limited to 30, so sign-up today!

Fill out a survey to give us ideas about what you would like to do at the JKC. Make a lanyard or keychain to hold your school ID, decorate a notebook (notebook provided), or play Wii games. Books featured for the month: challenged and banned books. Also, bring your favorite CD to listen to while you enjoy activities at the Cafe.

The Buchanan District Library end-of-summer reading program picnic will be held on Wednesday evening, August 12, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. in the Buchanan Commons, weather permitting. Joel Tacey will perform on the stage, and prizes will be awarded to those who participated in the reading program. Grand prize drawings will be held as well. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs for a great time!

Girls and Guys Lock-ins-Big Success!

The girls only and guys only lock-ins, held on October 18 and 25 were a huge success! 26 girls and 11 guys attended and a great time was had by all.

The teens carved pumpkins, played Wii games, and spent time on the computers. The girl's had their nails done, while the guys made duct tape wallets and things. Pizza was served, and their were door prize drawings every 1/2 hour.

Be sure to watch for info on the next lock-ins, sometime early next year!

Poor Turnout for November Lock-In

A teen lock-in was held on Saturday, November 17 from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m., and only 5 teens showed up. This was a real disappointment, as we were hoping for a big turnout. Is there a reason for the poor response? The lock-ins consist of food, computers, and crafts. Are there other things you'd like to see happen? If so, stop by and see Julie in the Youth Librarian's office. We would like to hold another lock-in in February, if the response is greater.

Is that still true?

The Unfinished Poem

I was standing there alone,
that one Friday night.
I was trying to think of
what it would be like
for someone to hold me tight.

It was hard at first.
But deep in thought,
I realized there was
someone that I admire alot.

He has everything I like in a guy,
the smarts, the style,
and his smiles are to die for.

But one small problem;
His glances are miles from me.

Suddenly I got what I want
to say to him.
I was wondering,
do you notice me?

Cause if you do, could you
show a sign of affection;
maybe a little attention?

Just to show me you care.
I really think we would make
the perfect pair.

I found out earlier this week
my plans are crushed,
along with my heart.

Why did I go along thinking
we could be together,
when that one person who
no longer longs to be,
but is, close to you.

I can be better, let me try!
I'm still screaming inside my head.
What can be said? What can be done?

I'm still wondering, still pacing,
not trying, soon
have to go facing the facts.

I need to tell you something,
something inportant.
Should I whisper,
or should I shout?
Should I email you,
or write a note?

I might fail, I chickened out.
I feel like I'm treating you like dirt.

Best Friends Forever

Together we take on any task;
But apart, my sorrow I cannot mask.

Through the halls our laughter chimes,
and we help each other in the worst of times.

If I go wrong, please let me know,
so our relationship can further grow.

Too hard to count the fun times we've had!
We quickly forgive when we get mad.

Will this rapport last forever?
To accomplish this I will endeavor.

For distant places we may someday part,
but you will always remain in my heart.

So, what is the reason for this promise I cast?
Best friends forever is a pledge that should last.

The Bus Stop

Waiting at the bus stop
I shivered from the cold.
When you walked up it seemed
as if you were outlined in gold.

You asked me if my shivering
was out of cold or fear.
I said, "The cold, I'm not afraid
for you to stand so near."

Then you removed your jacket,
and handed it to me.
I shyly refused your jacket,
embarrassed, so you see.

You put the jacket on my shoulders
and back a step you took.
"I'm Meagan," I said extending my hand.
"Ryan," you said. We shook.

Day after day we stood
waiting for the bus.
Not a single word spoken
by either one of us.

Until one day I turned to you
and bravely started to say
"I have a crush on you, Ryan,
and also, by the way..."

As I started to tell you
what it was burning on my mind,
you told me that you liked me, too,
but the words were hard to find.

I smiled a smile that seemed to stretch
to both of my two ears.
The smiling and the happiness
erasing all my fears.

And now, my friend, you're dying
and there's nothing I can do,
but sit with you and hold your hand,
and be forever true.

Last night while you were sleeping,
your soul just slipped away.
The many words that filled my heart
were impossible to say.

As I was cleaning out the drawer
that stood beside your empty bed,
I found a letter addressed to me
and heard your voice speak as I read.

"My darling, I am sorry that
I will have to leave so soon.
You know how much I love you
and I know you love me, too."

"I hope you won't forget me,
but please do try to move on.
I hope that you won't cry too much
when I am dead and gone."

Two silent tears slid down my face
and moistened both my cheeks.
I won't get over the loss of you,
not for days and not for weeks.

I continued reading the letter
that I held in both my hands,
my fingers numb as if they had
been wrapped in rubber bands.

Now I'm standing at the bus stop
where two years ago we met.
And as I stand here in the cold
I feel my cheeks start to get wet.

I don't think I will get over you,
never, not in any way.
Our anniversary would have been
two years ago today.

And on this lonely bus ride,
I sit alone without you near.
I hear a voice that may just be
the voice I've longed to hear.

The voice is from an angel,
and his words are sweet and strong.
He tells me, "Life's a treasure.
Learn to love again. Move on."

And through the words he whispers
I finally start to see,
that although I'll always love you,
It's time to set you free.

Late-night Talk

His name came up
on the caller ID
At exactly
eleven forty-three.

I answered it in
my cheery fashion
For our late-night talks
were always my passion.

But his voice told me
that something was wrong
Like a horror movie's
foreshadowing song.

As he took a deep breath
and told me the phrase
"We need to talk"
I was put in a daze.

"We have a connection
and get along fine.
There's nothing you've done
The problem is mine."

"You understand, don't you?
Are you still there?"
I tried to answer
as I felt my heart tear.

"We're gonna stay friends.
We'll talk every day.
Meagan, do you have
anything to say?"

A thousand thoughts
were ready to spill.
But my mouth wouldn't talk
as my eyes began to fill.

Thoughts raced through my head,
old memories played.
The thought of being alone
Made me feel so afraid.

"I'm not expecting you
to understand.
You're a sophomore,
Life holds different demands."

"Still one day
when your life is SAT's,
College applications,
and activities,

You'll realize why
I made this choice.
Talk to me, Meagan,
do you have a voice?"

I would have if I hadn't
hung up so quick
To comfort myself,
I was feeling quite sick.

So then this is it.
This is the end.
What more can I say then?
I'll miss you, my friend.

Twelve dairy princesses and a popular boy band go missing within days of each other. A coincidence, or something sinister? The police are baffled. This book has trolls, magic, and music. A daring heroine and heroes. I liked this book alot, and think you will, too!

Lock-in at the Library a Smash Hit!

The lock-in at the library, held this past Saturday night, was a big success! 28 teens attended and had a great time. We had pizza, pop, and chips. Computers were available to all, as well as Karaoke, which was very popular throughout the night. Teens were able to make their own key chains. Games were available, such as Uno and Life, but everyone was having too much fun singing and dancing to play them. Several suggestions were made for future lock-ins.

Sheila and I (Julie) were very pleased with how well things went. You guys were great! There was little mess to clean up after we closed the doors at 11:00. I think everyone had fun. I know I did!

Please take a minute to add a comment here about the lock-in. We would like to do this at least every other month. We need your thoughts and suggestions.

I'll have a poster up in the teen area of the library with the pictures I took later this week. Check it out!
